MENOMINEE — The Menominee Red Wave pounded out an 18-0 victory over the Escanaba Cubs in American Legion Baseball action at Spies Field on Monday.

The Red Wave were clicking on all cylinders as the offense put crooked numbers on the board in each inning, batting around twice. Meanwhile, right-hander Matt Delfosse was in cruise control on the mound.

Red Wave coach John Lauzer liked what he saw in his team’s final home game of the regular season.

“Our plate appearances looked good tonight,” he said. “We’ve been struggling at the plate, but tonight we hit a lot of balls to right field which is nice to see. We like to pull the ball a lot, but tonight we had our weight in the right position, which is great to see.”

Lauzer’s crew improved to 11-10 on the season, but he feels that record does not tell his team’s story.

“We just came out of two tough tournaments with really good competition,” he said. “We went 1-3 in both tournaments, but we learned a lot from that, so our record is misleading.”

There were no struggles at the plate on Monday as an RBI double from Andrew Schroeder and a two-run triple from Kyle Porath highlighted a four-run first inning. Kyle Struve ripped an RBI triple in the second and the Red Wave plated five more runs.

Menominee batted around in the third and fourth innings. Jesus Becerra (double) and Delfosse (single) each knocked in a pair during a five-run third. A pair of Escanaba errors along with a walk, a hit batter and three singles accounted for a four-run fourth that capped the scoring at 18-0.

Meanwhile, Delfosse was all but unhittable on the mound.

“Matt had not pitched in nine days,” Lauzer said. “So he was pretty fresh. Once Matt gets into a groove, he just rares back and fires, and he did very well tonight.”

Delfosse, a Wausaukee High School product, struck out 11 in a complete-game (five inning) shutout. After allowing a single to the second batter of the game, he struck out seven consecutive Cubs. After leadoff man Jake Anderson flew out to right, Delfosse did not allow another ball out of the infield aside from four singles that snuck through the Menominee infield.

Delfosse faced 19 batters while striking out 11 and walking none in five innings. At the plate, Delfosse went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Struve was 4-for-4 with three singles, a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored. Becerra (2-for-3, 3 RBIs) also had a pair of hits as Menominee outhit Escanaba 13-4.

The Red Wave will play their regular season finale on Wednesday at Gladstone in advance of this weekend’s Mid-Pen Conference tournament action.
