MARINETTE — The Marinette boys’ soccer team (1-0-1) played to a 0-0 draw against Shawano (0-1-1) on Thursday. Despite the lack of scoring, both teams had plenty of chances.

“It’s bizarre that a game that has so many chances ends in a 0-0 tie,” Coach Frank Pohlman said after the game. “Overall, I think it’s a fair result. Two good teams. What we saw here today was two really good goalies on both sides.

Ryan Dura handled the net minding for the Marines and came away with nine saves to his credit, but Shawano’s William Bergner answered with nine saves of his own to keep Marinette off the board.

There were goal scoring opportunities for both teams throughout the game. Late in the first half, Noah Cegelski played ahead to a streaking Gavin Thiry, but Bergner was just quick enough to beat the sophomore forward to the ball. The same combination of Cegelski and Thiry nearly resulted in a goal just minutes later, but again Bergner was up to the task and the game reached halftime with no score.

“In the first half, we probably had the better chances,” Pohlman said. “Three, four, five times we could have scored.” However Pohlman did not see his team execute the way it did during its win over Kingsford. “Against Kingsford we got chances out of combination play, out of good passing.  Today it was more a little coincidence.”

With just over 12 minutes to play Christmas came early for the Marines when Mitchell Jung’s shot hit the crossbar and went straight down before Dura was able to coral the ball.  In the closing minutes, Alex Shaw created several opportunities for the Marines, but the teams had to settle for a draw.

Statistically the game was as even as the score would indicate. Shawano outshot Marinette 28-26 while both teams managed nine shots on goal. Both teams had a pair of corner kicks while an 8-6 foul count favored the Marines.

Marinette will return to the field on Tuesday when it hosts Peshtigo.
