IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. — The Marinette soccer team (2-2-2) suffered a 2-1 loss at Iron Mountain (1-1) on Tuesday.

Iron Mountain controlled the action for the first 30 minutes. The Mountaineers had numerous chances during that opening stretch but were repeatedly turned away by senior goalkeeper Ryan Dura, who finished the game with 17 saves.

While Marinette got off the mat, generating opportunities for Sam McClain and Noah Cegelski in the first half, it was Iron Mountain that broke the scoreless tie with a goal just before halftime.

The second half saw a more balanced game, but the Mountaineers pushed ahead 2-0 with a goal in the 62nd minute. Coach Frank Pohlman was proud of his team’s resiliency, “We didn’t give up, we continued to fight.”

That fight finally payed off when Cegelski knocked in his third goal of the season with three minutes to play. Unfortunately the final three minutes did not allow enough time for the Marines to level the contest.

“This was a hard fought game. It was a very fair game,” Pohlman said. “The score obviously tells the story of a close game. Unfortunately we didn’t win it, but now its time to get back to our winning mode against Green Bay West.”

Marinette hosts Green Bay West on Thursday. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
