WRIGHTSTOWN — The Marinette boys basketball team can confirm that Wrightstown is the North Eastern Conference favorite at this point.

Thursday, the Marines went to Wrightstown for their first matchup of the season and returned with an 83-44 loss. Mayson Hazaert scored 23 of his game-high 29 points to lead the Tigers to their lopsided victory.

“We tried to limit (Hazaert) as much as we could, but (Wrightstown) did a good job to get him open looks,” Marinette coach Matt Joost said. “The game plan was to have help on him and we just didn’t execute that in the first half.”

Meanwhile, the Marines weren’t having such an easy time getting Jake Poetzl open. The Tigers held him to 11 points in the game, which was their game plan.

“They doubled-down on Jake a lot tonight and did a good job of keeping him in check,” Joost said. “They did a really good job in the post and having backside help; we couldn’t get him very good looks.”

Matt Wagner led the Marines with 20 points but Wrightstown’s offense was setting a pace of its own. The Tigers took a 51-26 lead into halftime and the Marines couldn’t close the gap in the second half. Wrightstown held Marinette to just 18 points in the second half and continued adding to its lead.

“Wrightstown is easily the favorite to win our conference right now,” Joost said.

The Marines next play on Tuesday, when they host Fox Valley Lutheran.
