MARINETTE — The Marinette Redbirds could not overcome 11 walks as they suffered an 11-4 loss at the hands of the Bonduel Broncos at Pederson Ball Park on Friday.

The Redbirds dug a hole early and could not recover. Starting pitcher Austin Marquart had trouble finding the plate as he issued free passes to the first five Bonduel hitters. All five walks came around to score before Marquart could right the ship.

It appeared that the Broncos might let Marinette back in the game as their starter, Trever Petersen had similar control issues in the bottom of the first. Jordan Rasner was hit by a pitch and Riley Hegg followed with a walk; however, Petersen recorded back-to-back strikeouts before walking Jason Hofer to load the bases. The Redbirds were in desperate need of a big hit, but Petersen got out of the inning with a ground ball to second.

Trey Bretl entered the game in relief of Marquart, making his Redbirds debut. Bretl tossed two effective innings, allowing two runs, one earned and striking out four.

Bonduel drew back-to-back walks to start the fourth, and the Broncos were in business again. Singles from Hunter Vanderlinder and Luke Kostreva as well as a Redbird error pushed three more runs across bringing the score to 10-0.

Marinette got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Blake Miller ripped a lead-off double and scored on a sac fly from Trevor Block.

Nick Daye and Chris Lafeber singled to start the fifth inning and Wally Rivera delivered a two-run double. Miller later drove Rivera in with a single, cutting the margin to 10-4.

That was a close as the Redbirds would get. Another lead-off walk turned into a run in the sixth to cap the scoring at 11-4.

Levi Kempka tossed the seventh inning and recorded Marinette’s lone 1-2-3 inning of the day.

Miller and Jordan Powers both went 2-for-3 at the plate, accounting for four of Marinette’s eight hits. Vanderlinder went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and four runs scored for Bonduel.
