COLEMAN — The Gillett girls basketball team swarmed Coleman defensively and posted a 65-42 victory in M&O conference action Tuesday evening.

Gillett improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play while Coleman fell to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

Gillett’s pressure defense stifled the Cougars from the start. The Tigers scored the first seven points of the game and did not surrender a bucket for the first three minutes and 47 seconds.

“We knew that they are a young team and if we could push the pressure on them we could kind of own the game,”Gillett coach Justin Daul said following the contest. “Putting pressure on is what we do from a program standpoint, and tonight it worked out in our favor.”

The Tigers built a commanding 37-15 lead in the first half by pressuring every inbound pass and defending the full court.

Kailey Klimek finally broke the drought for Coleman, and Kyla Manning later got the Tigers within five points, 13-8, with a long-range shot. However, Gillett outscored Coleman 24-7 for the remainder of the half.

“We worked on the pressure,” Coleman coach Glen Ziemer said. “We knew it was coming. We normally pressure as well, but they just outran us. They were definitely way more conditioned than us, faster, quicker. We knew it was coming, practiced it, and we just didn’t execute.”

Gillett’s Karissa Schaal led all scorers with 24 points, while Aubrey DeBauch finished with 17.

Coleman was led by Hailey Ziemer’s 11 points, while Cameron Compe added nine and Manning finished with seven points.

Daul was pleased with the effort and direction of his team. “They know it was a good game,” he said “but they know the potential is a lot better. We have a lot of stuff to work on and a lot to improve, but some things are starting to click.”

Both teams will continue in M&O conference play on Friday. Gillett will host Suring while Coleman hosts St. Thomas Aquinas Academy.
