MARINETTE — A dominate game on the mound from Trey Bretl and timely hitting was the recipe for success for the Marinette Legion baseball team, as Post 39 shut down a high-scoring Green Bay Southwest team for a 10-2 victory Wednesday night at Pedersen Ball Park.

Marinette’s offense made sure to give Bretl some early support by taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Brandon Eick hit a lead-off double and he scored on a single by Wil LaLonde. Post 39 added a second run in the inning when Trevor Bloch laid down a safety squeeze .

“We’re getting good at bats. It feels good to start playing our kind of baseball,” coach Brian Lesandrini said.

Green Bay Southwest, which had hung 15 runs on De Pere the day before, had no answer for Bretl.

Green Bay’s  Dayne Massey managed a hit of Bretl in the third inning and he later scored, but that was the only threat Southwest had all game.

“Trey shut down a really nice offense tonight,” Lesandrini said. “He settles us down for sure. He threw strikes all night and his pitches were working really well and he played good defense behind him.”

Nick Teteak made sure to lift his pitcher up in the third inning with a solo home run over the right field wall, giving Marinette a 3-1 advantage. Teteak’s homer brought an energy to the Marinette dugout, and Post 39 rolled with the momentum in the fifth.

Third baseman Jaden Werner lead off the frame with a walk, promptly stole second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Nolan Lemke, who later scored on a hit by LaLonde. Green Bay issued another free pass to Mason Risner pushing across another run and loaded the bases for Marinette.

Then things got weird. Bloch hit a grounder to third, but Green Bay third baseman Ryan Green had trouble corralling the ball, leading to an off-target throw to first base, which allowed Eick to score. As Bloch continued to run the bases, McMahon, Risner and Joe Bezio, acting as a pinch runner for LaLonde, broke for home plate. A throw from first to home was wide of Green Bay’s catcher, bringing home three more runs. As Bloch rounded third, another off-target throw back to Green Bay’s third baseman allowed Bloch to cruise home as well.  All told, Marinette scored seven runs on only three hits in the inning, giving it a 10-1 lead.

“That was one of the craziest things I’ve seen happen in all my years of coaching,” assistant coach Shawn McMahon said.

Bretl’s day on the mound ended in the sixth after pitching 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits and one earned run while walking four and striking out six.

McMahon took over for Bretl to finish the game and struggled with his command at first, walking three of the first four batters he faced to load the bases. A sacrifice fly brought home a run for Green Bay. Another walk loaded the bases for Southwest but a well-executed ground ball to third allowed Werner to step on the bag for the force out to end the game in Post 39’s favor 10-2.

“We’re getting our identity back,” Lesandrini said. “We came back real nice after a three day weekend and I like where we’re headed here. We’ve got a big stretch coming up.”

The stretch begins with another game against Menominee tonight at Spies Field. Marinette has lost twice to its rivals across the bridge already this season, and Lesandrini has a simple message for his team heading into the the third and final tilt.

“We owe them one,” he said.
