CRIVITZ — A rough start was too much for Niagara to overcome against Gibraltar in its WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal game on Tuesday.

A nine-run second inning by the Vikings was all they needed as they handily defeated the Badgers 9-2.

Six walks and a hit batter drove in the first four runs for Gibraltar, which then got a two-run sacrifice flyout to right field by Trevor Reinhardt and RBI singles from Griffin Reinhardt and Luke Steebs.

The Badgers scored their two runs in the bottom of the second. Anthony Hansen drilled a lead-off double, Tristan DeJardin followed with a double and both runners scored on a base hit by Elliot Peterson.

Niagara had just two base runners the rest of the contest as Steebs worked quickly.

Needing just 82 total pitches, Steebs gave up two runs on five hits to go along with four strikeouts for the Vikings.

Hansen suffered the loss for Niagara, giving up five runs on one hit with three K’s in three and one-third innings. Landen Kaldor threw the final three and two-third innings, giving up four runs on four hits with one punchout.

Athens defeated Greenwood 6-4 earlier in the day and went on to beat Gibraltar 5-3 to win the sectional final. Athens advances to the State Tournament, where it will face off against Webster.
