Marinette’s Tatum Ihde prepares to fire the ball to first during Tuesday’s game against Little Chute.

MARINETTE — Sydney Nemetz threw a two-hit shutout as Marinette avenged an early season 3-2 loss to Little Chute with a 4-0 North Eastern Conference win on Tuesday.

Nemetz walked just one batter while striking out a season-high 10 batters in her first shutout of the year.

In addition to Nemetz being exceptional in the circle, the Marine defense committed no errors and made the smart plays in order to preserve the shutout, according to their coach, Josh Lacy.

“The girls put together a good game today,” Lacy said. “Sydney was in complete control and the defense was flawless behind her all day. This was a redemption day for us. We felt we should have won last game (at Little Chute). We haven’t been swept by anyone this season so that was big to pick up the season series split.”

After two scoreless innings Marinette finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning.

Bailie Thielen reached base on a fielder’s choice and later came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Maya Carviou.

In the next inning, Mattie Renikow took advantage of an error to get on first and Tatum Ihde launched a two-run home run to give Marinette a 3-0 lead. The Marines loaded the bases with one out later in the fourth, but a strikeout and a fielder’s choice stranded the runners on base.

Renikow added to Marinette’s lead in the fifth inning when she hit a solo home run with one out.

“We never really got that big, breakout inning, but we hit some balls hard,” Lacy said.

Little Chute threatened to score in the top of the sixth when the leadoff batter tripled to start the inning, but Nemetz sat the next three batters down with two strikeouts and a groundout. She returned in the seventh and struck out the first two batters, allowed a single and then forced the next batter to groundout to end the game.

Marinette (7-11 overall, 7-10 NEC) hosts Oconto Falls on Thursday for a doubleheader.
