MARINETTE — The Marinette Redbirds shook off a tough loss on Friday to move to 3-1 in the Dairyland League with a 4-2 win over Nichols on Sunday at Pedersen Ball Park.

After dropping a marathon game against Hofa Park on Friday that went into 11 innings, Austin Marquardt helped get the Redbirds back on track by giving Marinette seven good innings on the mound. He allowed just four hits and struck out 11 batters while not issuing a walk.

Marinette scored in the bottom of the first when Jordan Powers hit a leadoff double and scored on Chris Lafeber’s double. Nichols got the run back in the top of the second on Kevin Vandenlangenberg’s home run, but the Redbirds retook the lead in their half of the inning when Kiefer Powers walked and scored on his older brother’s RBI-double.

Nichols tied it up in the fifth when Sam Blank singled and scored on a passed ball and Marinette broke the tie in the seventh inning. Lafeber singled and was driven in by Waldimer Rivera’s two-out double.

Riley Hegg entered the game in the eighth inning to relieve Marquardt on the mound and had to pitch himself out of a bases loaded jam. One walk and two errors led to Nichols loading the bases with two outs, but Hegg was able to coax a flyball to center to end the inning and strand all three runners on base.

Marinette had the opportunity to add to its lead in the eighth inning when the Redbirds loaded the bases with two outs on three walks and an error. Lafeber drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Wesli Rivera but a flyout ended the inning with the Redbirds hanging on to a 4-2 advantage.

Hegg came back onto the field for the ninth inning and after the first batter reached on an error, he calmed down and closed the game out to get a six-out save.

The Redbirds are back in action on Friday in Shawano.
