MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Menominee tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss at the hands of a very talented Marquette team.

The Maroons struggled against the Redmen, with Felipe Zamora being the only one who was able to take a set off his Abraham Moffett at No. 3 singles. Zamora fell in the first set 0-6 then battled back to win his second 6-4. In the deciding set, he was defeated 2-6, but Menominee coach Sam Larson took notice of how Zamora has been improving in such a short amount of time.

“Felipe had a really nice match today. He’s very coachable and his level of play is rising rapidly,” he said.

Tyler Kuester lost in 0-6 in both sets to Alec Olivier at No. 1 singles and Olivier’s younger brother, Nick, defeated Steve Polaski 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. MQT’s Ben Sternchuss won at No. 4 by forfeit.

The Maroons’ Kyle Anderson and Cade Fernstrum were topped by Trevor Lewis and Connor Johnson 2-6, 1-6 at No. 1 doubles, but showed their coach some flashes of good things.

“Kyle and Cade didn’t have their best overall match, but they’re showing glimpses of great tennis,” Larson said. “They need to try to get to the net as often as possible and shorten up points a little bit.”

Braeden Parrett and Noah Everard lost both sets 2-6 to Luke Frezacca and Soren Higgins at No. 2 doubles, Aidan Bellise and Brady Schultz dropped their No. 3 doubles match 1-6, 0-6 to Robert Apple and Beau Belkowski and Jason Bowers and Aden Laurin were defeated 1-6, 1-6 by Casey Yaden and Jack Franchino at No. 4.

Larson made note that while the Maroons have gotten a lot better at understanding the strategy of a match, they just aren’t yet quite skilled enough to execute what they’re trying to do.

“We just really need to get some time in practice to get repetitions on returning serves and net volleys,” he said. “We’re doing better at understanding the game, we just need to able to put it into action during the match.”

The Maroons host Esky on Thursday.
