KINGSFORD, Mich. — The Menominee boys and girls cross country teams each finished in fourth place at the Kingsford Invitational held at City Park in Iron Mountain, Mich., on Tuesday.

The boys finished with 104 points — 14 behind third-place Gladstone — and the girls finished just 11 points behind Houghton with 84 points.

“The Kingsford Invitational is a true cross country course with the hills and all of the trail running,” Menominee coach Eric Burmeister said. “The warm temperatures and humidity made the course even harder, so I was happy with the way both of the teams ran today.”

Leading the way for the girls was Hayden Buck who crossed the finish line in 22 minutes, 51 seconds for a fourth-place finish. Katie Anderla followed closely behind her in eighth place (23:23.5) to give the Maroons two finishers in the top-10.

Jaida Lesperance pushed her way past five runners in the last 800-meters, just missing out on getting herself a medal as she finished in 18th place (25:17.6).

“Every meet has a runner that inspires my love of cross country and today it was Jaida for how she finished off that race,” Burmeister said.

Maren Park finished in 24th place (26:05.5) and Attica Brandt rounded out the Maroons top-5 total of 84 points with her 30th-place finish (26:29.6). Mikakah Mead finished just behind Brandt in 34th (27:06.8), but her score was not used in the team score.

Landen Clausen led the boys side with his eighth-place finish (19:16.5) and Nick Sandahl snuck into the top-20 by turning in a solid last 800-meters of his own to finish in 20th (20:43.2).

“Landen ran a great race and Nick had a fantastic last 800-meters just like Jaida,” Burmeister said.

Just behind Sandahl was Evan Casey in 22nd (20:56.3) followed by Braeden Park in 28th (21:41.1) and Adam Sandahl rounded out the top-5 with his 30th-place finish (21:49.9). Jason Bowers’ 38th (23:03.5) and Brock Murphy’s 49th (24:04.8) were not used.

The Stephenson boys and girls teams also attended the invitational and both of their squads placed sixth.

Ethyn Lusardi led the boys with a 19th-place finish (20:37.4) and Kylee Kuntze turned in a 13th-place finish (24:08.2) for the girls.

In the JV boys race, Menominee’s Daniel Burch narrowly missed out on a medal with his 16th place (23:24.8); Aden Short came in 24th (24:09.4) and Aden Garcia was 26th (24:24.1). Stephenson’s Donny Strazzinski took 30th (25:14.1); Ashton Barstow was 33rd (26:08.1); Hunter Marks came in 40th (27:35.8) and Gavin Corey took 41st (27:39.9).
