MARINETTE — Facing top-notch competition to start their season, the Marinette Legion baseball team handled their own through four games this weekend.

Post 39 earned a pair of splits, winning the first of two games at Pedersen Ball Park on Saturday against Appleton Legion before also finishing with a split on the road against Plover on Sunday.

“A very encouraging weekend,” Marinette coach Brian Lesandrini said. “Plover returned most of its state team from last year and Appleton has a ton of talent. We’ll be alright if we play like this.”

Jaden Werner set the tone both offensively and on the mound in the first game against Appleton on Saturday. Werner tossed six shut-out innings while allowing just two hits to held Post 39 finish on top 6-0.

After a forgettable 19-5 loss to Appleton in the second game on Saturday, Post 39 bounced back with a convincing 10-6 win over Plover in the first game on Sunday, before narrowly losing 5-2 in the second.

Marinette took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the first game after Mason Risner singled, Trey Bretl ripped a double to left-center and both scored on a base hit to right by Nick Teteak.

Post 39’s lead grew to 4-0 in the fifth on RBI singles by Werner and Teteak, which drove in Trevor Block and Bretl. Two more insurance runs were added in the sixth on a sacrifice flyout by Bretl and a deep double off the wall in left by Werner.

After Werner reached his pitch limit at the end of the sixth, Risner came in to throw a scoreless seventh inning to close the game.

“Jaden threw a great game and kept them off-balance,” said Lesandrini. “We hit the ball well against a good team.”

Walks were the issue for Marinette in the second game against Appleton and at one point, Appleton drew 10 walks without recording a hit.

Werner was the bright spot for Post 39 in the second contest against Appleton, blasting a three-run home run.

Like he did throughout the spring, Bretl was in prime form against Plover on Sunday. Tossing six and two-third innings, Bretl allowed five runs, but only one was earned while striking out five batters and scattering seven hits.

“Trey pitched exactly how we needed him to after how bad we looked in the second game against Appleton,” Lesandrini said. “He did one heck of a job.”

Both Werner and Hunter Woulf carried Post 39 offensively in the first contest against Plover. Werner was three-for-four with two RBI’s while Woulf connected for two hits and also drove in two runs.

Rounding off an impressive weekend, Werner recorded two more hits in the second game against Plover. He finished the weekend 9-for-16 with nine RBI’s and was impressive in the field.

“Jaden had quite a weekend which showed how great of a player he is,”Lesandrini said.

Seth Seefeldt suffered the loss on Sunday against Plover, allowing five runs (four earned) in six hits while giving up six hits and striking out three.

It was the first loss for Plover on the season, as Post 39 dropped them to 4-1, a feat Lesandrini was pleased with.

“Very respectable showing this weekend,” said Lesandrini. “We have a nice nucleus. We had some really good at-bats and I was impressed with our offense, especially against some very good pitching. We battled and we’ll just need to keep playing together in order to have success.”

Marinette plays its next game at home on Wednesday against Oshkosh.
