MOSINEE, Wis. — Kelten Hermanson picked a great day to shoot his career-best score.

The Marinette freshman carded a 5-over-par 77 at Tuesday’s WIAA Division 2 Mosinee Sectionals at Indianhead Golf Club, helping the Marines take the team trophy by 16 strokes and punch their ticket to the state meet held at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.

“It hasn’t really all set it yet, but it feels pretty darn good right now,” Hermanson said of his career day.

Sophomore Ty Kretz led the Marines with his second-place score of 75, one shot behind Winneconne senior Bryce Peters. Kretz shot 3-under-par (33) on the front nine before struggling to a 42 on the back, but he’s just happy to be moving on with his team.

“I had a really good front nine and then struggled off the tee on the back,” he said. “But it was good enough for us to win by 16 and now we’re statebound. The whole team shot really well. It’s a huge confidence booster heading into state.”

Senior Chas Ferm turned in the Marines third best score with his 82, good for seventh place.

“I played pretty well. Just hit smart shots and tried to keep the ball in play on the tight back nine and it helped me score so well,” Ferm said.

Ferm and Hermanson drew praise from their teammate, senior Matt Wagner, who finished the day with an 84 to tie for 11th.

“I didn’t play my best golf today, but at the end of the day it was enough to help the team advance to state,” he said. “I have to a lot of credit to my teammates, especially Chas and Kelten, for stepping up and shooting some great scores.”

The two also caught a little bit of praise from their coach as well, along with the rest of the team.

“When you have four and five players shooting the kind of scores Chas and Kelten did, we knew it was our day,” Marinette coach Pete Kretz said. “Ty and Matt played steady enough that nobody was catching us and Wes showed his potential by playing well on the back after struggling on the front.”

Senior Wes Knutson’s 91 was thrown out for Marinette’s team score of 318, and even though he didn’t shoot as well as he would have liked, winning sectionals and going to state is a dream come true for him.

“Winning sectionals has been one of my goals since being the alternate and watching the varsity win it my freshman year,” he said. “Although I didn’t play well, I know what I need to work on this week to play better at state.”

Peshtigo took fourth (341) as a team and failed to qualify any individuals for the state meet. Senior Trent Carriveau led the Bulldogs with an 84, senior Ty Davis shot 85, sophomores Jordan Carvenough and Adam Bauman carded 86s and sophomore Maija Carriveau shot 88.

“We struggled some on the final nine holes today, but the kids played their hearts out,” Peshtigo coach Jim Dufrane said. “Unfortunately, today just wasn’t our best day on the links, but it wasn’t from lack of effort. We are very proud of this team and all they have accomplished this spring.”

While prepping for state is going to be a lot of practice over the next week, Wagner is still going to take some time to enjoy ending his high school career as a sectional champion.

“We have a lot of work to do to prepare for University Ridge,” he said. “But man, does this sectional championship feel special.”
