MARINETTE — The Marinette wrestling team earned the first shutout of coach Jason Champagne’s three-year tenure with a 64-0 victory of Clintonville-Marion on Thursday.

Due to the number of forfeits, Marinette had the team decision in-hand early, but it sought the shutout victory and won each of the head-to-head matchups.

“The challenge was getting our kids mentally ready to go for the matches we did have,” Champagne said. “I think we did a pretty goo d job of that. We got accomplished what we wanted to get accomplished tonight despite the forfeits.”

Five divisions were contested on Thursday and the Marines won by pin in four of them. The Truckers forfeited matches in the 132, 138, 160, 170, 182 and 220 weight classes while 106, 113 and 120 were double-forfeits.

Jonny Bieber got things started with a technical fall (16-6) over Jetlyn Michonski at 126. Sam Gressel (145), Josh Walker (152), Anthony Jardeen (195) and Darik McMahon (285) all pinned their opponents.

Gressel got the job done in the first period against Michael Michonski. Walker needed 3:58 to defeat Matthew Skowronski. Jardeen took down Seth Collar in 1:46, and McMahon pinned Levi Engel in 2:54.

The Marines have a week off before going to Little Chute on Thursday for a Northeastern Conference multi-meet.

“We need to come ready to go next Thursday,” Champagne said, “Because we’re going to see some really good competition.”

The Marines will go up against three of the top-5 and four of the top-10 teams in Division 2 according to WIWrestling’s ranking released on Thursday. No. 1 Wrightstown, No. 4 Freedom, No. 5 Luxemburg-Casco and No. 7 Denmark also are included in the field for the meet at Little Chute.
