MARINETTE — The Marinette wrestling team opened its season with a 59-24 Northeastern Conference win over Fox Valley Lutheran on Thursday.

Though the Foxes forfeited three matches and the Marines surrendered only one, Marinette breezed to the win by taking eight of the remaining 10 contests. The Marines wracked up points with seven pins and a technical fall.

“I really liked our intensity tonight,” coach Jason Champagne said. “We saw a lot of hustle and a lot of kids being aggressive. That’s one thing we’ve really been preaching, that we need to attack first and we need to be the aggressor. I think overall we did a really good job tonight.”

Fox Valley Lutheran took a 12-0 lead after Marinette forfeited the 106-pound weight class and Jonah Gagnon pinned Shane Daigneault at 113.

From there, Marinette rattled-off five straight wins and finished the night by taking 11 of the last 12 matches.

Johnathon Bieber (120), Isaiah Walker (132), Joshua Walker (145), Sam McClain (160), Sean Holk (170), Dillon Hill (182) and Darik McMahon (285) all pinned their opponents. Owen Suennen Jr. scored a technical fall by defeating Charles Ziegler 22-6 in the 126-pound weight class.

The Marines will compete in the Papermaker Invitational at Kimberly High School on Saturday.

“We will see some really good competition on Saturday,” Champaigne said. “We’re going to see some state place winners and state qualifiers, but we will take some positives from tonight and hopefully we can bring the same kind of intensity on Saturday.”

Marinette’s next home meet is Thursday, it hosts Clintonville in another NEC contest.
