BONDUEL, Wis. — The Marinette and Peshtigo golf teams are moving on to sectionals after the Bulldogs won Tuesday’s WIAA Division 2 Bonduel regional and the Marines finished five strokes behind for second place.

Peshtigo totaled a team score of 330 to edge the Marines (335), but both teams were well ahead of the rest of the competition. Third-place Mosinee finished with a team score of 361 and Wittenberg-Birnamwood took fourth with a 367.

Marinette sophomore Ty Kretz overcame his highest nine-hole score of the season on the front nine (40) to shoot a one-under-par 34 on the back for a total of 74 and take medalist honors.

“I bogeyed my last three holes on the front and that led to my highest nine-hole score this year,” Kretz said. “I knew I had to play well on the back to help my team and I ended up shooting one-under. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to take the team trophy.”

Peshtigo senior Trent Carriveau finished with a 75 (38-37) for runner-up honors.

“We got another top level performance from Trent today,” Peshtigo coach Jim Dufrane said. “He has a strong belief in his game now and his 75 made a big difference for us in repeating as regional champs.”

In addition to Kretz shooting his worst front-nine score of the year, his teammates, seniors Matt Wagner and Wes Knutson, also had their worst front nines of the year but were able to come back and salvage a decent score. Wagner carded a 44 on the front and Knutson totaled a 51, but Wagner fired a 35 on the back to finish with a 79 to tie for fourth and Knutson shot 42 to finish with a 93.

“I’m proud of the kids for not giving up in tough conditions and still having a chance in the end to catch Peshtigo,” Marinette coach Pete Kretz said. “We have a nice, friendly rivalry between us. I’ve coached all of those kids on that team and they can all play.”

Senior Chas Ferm and freshman Kelten Hermanson both shot 91s to round out the Marines scores.

The Bulldogs top four scores all came from within the top 10. Behind Carriveau’s 75 was sophomore Jordan Carvenough carding an 81 for sixth, senior Adam Bauman overcame a quadruple-bogey 8 on his first hole to shoot an 84 and take seventh and senior Ty Davis tied for ninth with a 90. Senior Maija Carriveau tied for 26th with her 99.

“Jordan gave us a solid round of 81 and Adam provided a great example of how to overcome a bad hole during a round,” Dufrane said. “All in all on another cold and windy day at the course, our consistency from top to bottom helped us achieve another team goal. We’re excited to be moving onto sectionals next Tuesday.”

The Marines will have a chance to get some revenge on the Bulldogs in Tuesday’s Mosinee Sectionals at Indianhead Golf Course.

“We will meet again, as they say,” coach Kretz said.
