APPLETON, Wis. — The 14-seeded Marinette Marines soccer team went up against 4-seeded Xavier on Thursday, and the Marines were overmatched against the Hawks, falling 10-0 in the opening round of the WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal.

Xavier sports at least three girls that play soccer year-round for FC Wisconsin on its team, and while Marinette was able to hold them off for a short time, the Hawks netted five goals in a 10-minute span to break the game open.

“(Xavier) has a really good team with a lot of good players who play the game all year round,” Marinette coach Chris Mahlik said. “We were able to hold them off for a while, but then we got a little overwhelmed, and once they scored those five goals in that short time we saw how good they are.”

The Hawks scored five more goals and Marinette couldn’t put one by the goalie within 60 minutes. The game ended by mercy rule.

“It’s obviously never easy or fun to lose, but I’m proud of the way the girls competed all season long,” Mahlik said. “They never gave up and fought the whole way.”

It was the last game for three players — seniors Mady Sims, Michaela DeWitt and Hannah Doubek — and Mahlik commented about the time and effort that the three have put in over their careers.

“Those three girls gave four years of great effort to this program,” he said. “We’re going to miss them next year, but we’re also excited for what we have coming back.”
