LITTLE CHUTE, Wis. — The Lena and Gillett wrestling teams each competed at the 12-team Sgt. Nick Mueller Memorial Tournament in Little Chute on Saturday. 

Gillett came in 10th place with 36 points and Lena/STAA was 11th with 22 points. 

Sam Lemens of Gillett was the highest finisher between the two teams, taking 2nd-place in the 145 division. He pinned Sam Oswald of Xavier in 52 seconds in the quarterfinals match and pinned Little Chute’s Devin Stanelle in 1:30 in the semifinals. In the championship match against Wrightstown’s Ben Durocher, Lemens was defeated by technical fall. Wrightstown won the meet with a score of 263.5.

Mike VanDenElzen placed 5th in the 182-pound category for 10 more team points for Gillett. He was defeated in his first match against Wrightstown’s Hunter Bartoszek by an 8-4 decision and won his 5th-place match against Sean Hesse of Xavier by pinfall in 36 seconds. 

Terry Helminger picked up a win at 152 by pinning Omro’s Carter Wardner in 1:18 but dropped the 5th-place match to Freedom’s Trevor Anderson. Helminger placed 6th. 

For Lena, Cody Dellise defeated Freedom’s Anderson at 152 by a 10-7 decision in his first match but fell to Walker VandeHey in the semifinal. He advanced to the 3rd-place match but lost to Xavier’s Adrian Chenci by pinfall in 2:52. 

Ramiro Cortez placed 6th in the 170-pound division, losing to Appleton West’s Bryce Ewald by pinfall in 5:35. 

At 120, Kevin Chang picked up a 10-6 decision victory over Appleton West’s Chase Wendt before falling to Omro’s Kaden Besaw in the 5th-place match.
