ELCHO, Wis. — The Wausaukee boys basketball team appeared poised to punch its ticket to the WIAA Division 5 sectional finals until two clutch 3-pointers in the final seconds by Mike Stamper lifted Wabeno/Laona to a 68-67 victory over the Rangers on Thursday.

Wausaukee led 66-62 with 15 seconds remaining before Stamper drilled a 3-pointer that cut the Rebel’s lead to one. Wausaukee tacked on a Hayden Renikow free throw but couldn’t stop Stamper from banking in a 25-foot triple with just 5.3 left to play that put Wabeno/Laona ahead. A desperation trey from Renikow was knocked away into no man’s land as time expired to seal the Rebel victory.

The Rangers led 42-31 at halftime but were outscored 37-25 in the second half, with Stamper knocking down four triples for the Rebels. The deep ball worked well for Wausaukee in the first half, with Tristan Pollard, Brandon Shigouri and Renikow combining for eight 3-pointers, including four from Renikow, but could only sink two in the second half.

Renikow had a monster game with 29 points while Pollard dropped 14 and Brendan Versaskas and Brandon Shigouri each chipped in eight. Stamper led Wabeno/Laona with 21 points, Connor Taylor added 15 and Jesse Pakulski finished with 10.
