GAYLORD, Mich. — Menominee’s Tyler Huesinger and Connor Bretl each placed fourth in their respective divisions on Saturday at the MHSAA Discrict 17-3 individual district tournament.

Huesinger received a bye in the first round of the 140-pound weight class before falling to Kalkaska’s Cody Isrow in 3 minutes, 49 minutes knocking him into the consolation round where he pinned Lake City’s Josh Shivlie in 1:46 and defeated Cheboygan’s Isaiah Ming by 9-8 decision.

In the third-place match against Kingsford’s Josh Peterson, Huesinger had to settle for fourth as Peterson pinned him in 1:50.

After a first-round bye, Bretl (130) fell to Benzie Central’s Dylan Chrzanowski in 1:43 to fall to the consolation bracket. Against Ludington’s Tiler Marrison, Bretl won by pinfall in 57 seconds and then beat Negaunee’s John Schouten by 7-3 decision for a rematch with Chrzanowski for third place. Bretl put up a better fight this time around, taking Chrzanowski into the second round before being pinned in 4:01.

Aiden Smith (135) put together a few wins, pinning Boyne City’s Grace Whisler in 3:13 in the first round, but fell to Kalkaska’s Devon Beck in 1:56 in his next match to fall into the consolation bracket. He defeated Lake City’s Caleb Doe by technical fall (16-0) in five minutes, but in the consolation semifinals he was defeated by Grayling’s Tucker Mertes by 9-4 decision. Mertes went on to win the third-place match.

Pedro Montoya (189) also made it all the way to the consolation semifinals before he was defeated by Benzie Central’s Jacob Stevenson by pinfall in 2:12. On the way there, he pinned Reed City’s Noah Morgan in 1:21 and defeated Kingsford’s Ethan Gribble by sudden victory 7-5.

At 160, Braxton Silkworth won his first round match over Cheboygan’s Dakota Kortz by pinfall in 48 seconds before dropping his next two matches to knock him out of the competition.

Wilbert Ortega (103) and Adam Conine (189) both fell in their first round matches and didn’t have another match in the day.
