APPLETON — A four-run first inning and clutch late-inning pitching helped lead Crivitz past Xavier 7-6 in a nonconference baseball game on Monday.

Dawson Andrist and Austin Burnside drew walks to start the game for the Wolverines. Jaden Werner followed by roping an RBI double to score Andrist and both Burnside and Werner scored on errors at third. Jonah Behrendt reached base on a fielder’s choice and was driven in by a Chase Gosse single.

Werner drilled a triple and scored on a groundout to second to start the second inning to give the Wolverines a 5-0 lead, which turned out to be a key run when Xavier plated four runs in the bottom of the second.

An RBI groundout by Andrist scored Ethan Pelkin in the third and the Wolverines got their seventh run via a run-scoring single by Behrendt to drive in Burnside.

Werner, who started the game, earned the mound win by tossing four and two-third innings while allowing five runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts.

Burnside came on to record the final two outs, stranding runners on second and third before striking out Zach Wiesgerber to end the game.

Crivitz improved to 16-7 with the victory.
