MARINETTE — The UWGB-Marinette women’s basketball team extended its win streak on Wednesday.

Marinette was on a three-game streak entering the game against UW-Fond du Lac, with consecutive wins over UW-Marathon and another over UW-Washington. The Buccaneers scored at least 70 points and finished with a double-digit advantage in each of the victories.

They continued each of those marks, earning a 73-61 win in their final game of 2018. Brianne Burnett (Menominee) scored a game-high 20 points and was one of four Marinette players to reach double-figure scoring. Coach Jeff Sunstrom said his team had to counter the size advantage for Fond du Lac.

“(FDL) was much bigger and can get the ball into the lane,” he said. “Our 3-2 zone is what really worked for us.”

Marinette took an early lead in the first quarter and still held an advantage to start the second, where the defense allowed for a larger gap on the scoreboard.

“We came out with a man-to-man (defense) and wound-up going about six minutes with that,” Sunstrum said. “Then we switched to the 3-2 zone late in the first quarter and into the second half.”

While the lead increased for Marinette while holding the Falcons to eight second-quarter points, Sunstrom knows the advantage could have been larger but if not for the defense, Fond du Lac could have been closer entering halftime.

“We did a nice job of rotating the basketball and were able to feed the post,” he said. “But for a while there, we couldn’t score.

“And even though we were struggling to score for a bit, our defense was holding them pretty well.”

When the Buccaneers went to the post, they often were looking for Burnett. She led them to a 15-point lead to start the third quarter and helped them withstand a Falcons’ run early in the third.

Fond du Lac shrank the Marinette lead to six points not long after halftime, though the inside-out game reappeared to rebuild that advantage. Sarah Pettit added 11 points for Marinette; Jordan Miller (Marinette) and Morgan Roman (Menominee) had 10 points each; Pettit added eight rebounds while Roman had seven rebounds and four assists.

Marinette has three weeks away from competition and enters its next game — Jan. 5 at UW-Baraboo — with a 5-1 overall record.
