OCONTO — The Oconto girls basketball team nearly recovered from a lackluster first half.

The Blue Devils struggled offensively in the first half of Monday’s game against Laona-Wabeno and were limited to just 16 points before halftime. Though they recovered to pull within striking range in the second half, they took a 49-42 loss.

Mara Allen led Oconto with 15 points, including eight of the team’s first-half points. She was one of just three Blue Devils to score in the first half; Jenna Hornblad added five points and Leah Allan had three. Laona-Wabeno, meanwhile, had better success from the floor and five 3-pointers boosted it to a 31-16 lead before half.

Oconto limited Laona-Wabeno to just one 3-point make in the second half while sinking five of its own. Hallie Wusterbarth and Maggie Sohrweide sank two 3-pointers each and Allen scored another seven points after halftime.

The Blue Devils shrank the deficit in the second half but Laona-Wabeno made just enough of its free throws to maintain a lead. It finished 7-for-13 from the line in the second half and 11-for-17 overall.

Hornblad finished with eight points; Wusterbarth and Sohrweide had six points each.

Oconto dropped to 2-2 overall and plays at Southern Door on Thursday.
