STURGEON BAY — Lianna Baxter scored a game-high 30 points for the Peshtigo girls basketball team in a 47-36 win over Sturgeon Bay on Thursday.

Baxter scored 15 points in each half, though the Bulldogs were able to turn a close game in the first half into a decent lead in the second. They took a 22-20 lead into the half, with Sturgeon Bay’s Sarah Bridenhagen trying to counter Baxter and scoring 14 of her 24 points in the first half.

Fortunately for the Bulldogs, Baxter had more complementary scoring than Sturgeon Bay did in the second half. Grace Wickman added six second-half points for Peshtigo.

Sturgeon Bay did however shrink a double-digit Peshtigo lead late in the second half; both teams had mounting foul trouble as the game went on.

“We had three girls foul out and (Sturgeon Bay) had two girls foul out,” Peshtigo coach Bruce Parkovich said. “The lead was cut down to three and we had a play setup for Lianna, she scored and got fouled.

“She made the free throw and from there it was a matter of making more free throws.”

Baxter was 9-for-14 at the free throw line in the second half and Peshtigo was 21-for-35 in the game. Meanwhile, the Clippers finished 15-for-30.

Wickman finished with nine points for Peshtigo, which improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the Packerland Conference. The Bulldogs host Menominee tonight.
