MARINETTE — The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office is warning anyone, especially ice fishermen, to use caution on the ice.

Sheriff Jerry Sauve said the ice on the bay of Green Bay is extremely dangerous and a tragedy was avoided Saturday when a fisherman fell through the thin ice on his snowmobile on the bay off of Pond Road.

Sauve said a team effort was utilized to rescue the angler. It included the Marinette Fire Department, Town of Peshtigo Fire Department, Wisconsin DNR wardens, rescue squads, paramedics, sheriff’s personnel and other fishermen. The victim was pulled from the water, treated at Aurora Bay Area Hospital and released.

The sheriff said it was “a close call.”

“This year’s late-developing ice did not allow for the normal thickness that develops most seasons,” Sauve said. “Now with the warm weather, wind, rain, and ice breaking operations announced by the Coast Guard, the sheriff’s office is appealing to all fishermen to be extremely careful or wait until next year. No fish is worth the risk of loss of life.”
