ONTONAGON COUNTY, Mich. — Following a ground and air search, a crashed aircraft was located Sunday in Ontonagon County and its lone occupant was reported deceased.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department received information Saturday that an aircraft had departed the Gogebic County Airport destined for the Ontonagon County Airport, but the airplane did not arrive as scheduled. Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department deputies obtained the coordinates of the pilot’s last known cell phone location and narrowed the search area with the help of Civil Air Patrol.

A ground search team consisting of various law enforcement agencies covered an extremely remote and inaccessible area of Carp Lake Township in Ontonagon County, and the aircraft was located, with the pilot dead at the scene. The pilot’s name has not been released, and the Federal Aviation Administration will perform an investigation.
