Phone scam targets sex offenders

MARINETTE — According to Sheriff Jerry Sauve, a scam has been reported involving sex offenders being contacted by phone and being told they are in non-compliance and owe money.

He said they are instructed to call a phone number with a recording set up identifying themselves at the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office. He said this is not a sheriff’s office number, and neither the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office nor the department of Corrections operate in such a manner. He also said messages left by law enforcement at the number have remained unreturned.

This matter is under investigation. Sauve warns the public to not send money or provide personal information to anyone over the phone.
