Pembine drug dealer sent to prison

MARINETTE —  A 60-year-old drug dealer will spend time in prison for her crime.

Dawn E. Lesage, 60, Pembine, was sentenced Friday in Marinette County Circuit Court Branch 2 to 18 months in prison for possession with intent to deliver — amphetamines. That is to be followed by three years of extended supervision. The crime occurred on Dec. 12, 2018, and a no contest plea was entered on July 22. 

A charge of maintain a drug trafficking place was dismissed, but read in at sentencing.

The sentence will follow a nine-month jail sentence Lesage is serving for misstate facts in food stamp application.

Thief caught playing bingo, sent to jail

 STANTON, Mich. (AP) — A woman convicted of embezzling money from two cemeteries has been sent to jail after she was discovered playing bingo at an American Legion hall in western Michigan.

The Daily News reports that Donna Mae Goodsell violated probation by spending money on bingo when she owes $19,000 to two townships in Montcalm County. Chief assistant prosecutor Christopher Hekman says Goodsell was specifically ordered to stay away from bingo games.

Hekman tells the newspaper that Goodsell was ordered to jail for 90 days last week. A call to her attorney wasn’t answered Wednesday.

Goodsell was cemetery sexton for Day and Evergreen townships. In 2018, she pleaded no contest to embezzlement.

New York sees drop in HIV diagnoses 

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo says new state figures show the number of new HIV diagnoses has dropped to a new low since the peak of the epidemic.

Cuomo in a Wednesday announcement says New York saw 2,481 new HIV diagnoses last year — a 28% drop from 2014.

The state directs $20 million annually to Cuomo’s 2014 initiative to end the AIDS epidemic by the end of 2020. Health commissioner Howard Zucker says New York is making significant advances to reach that goal.

Cuomo’s office says 32,000 New Yorkers filled at least one prescription of pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, last year. That’s up 32% from 2017.
