“The Associated Press article entitled ‘Wisconsin GOP renews anti-abortion push’ mischaracterizes the holding of Roe v. Wade by stating ‘Roe v. Wade ruling legalizes abortions performed before a fetus has a reasonable chance of surviving outside the womb.’

“More accurately, Roe v. Wade holds that the state may not regulate abortion for any reason during the first trimester, may regulate abortion only to protect the health of the woman during the second trimester, and may regulate abortion during the third trimester except where abortion is necessary to preserve the woman’s life or health.

“Another case decided the same day, Doe v. Bolton, defined a woman’s health to include ‘all factors — physical, emotional, psychological, familial and the woman’s age — relevant to the well-being of the patient.’ This health exception expanded the right to abortion for any reason through all three trimesters of pregnancy.

“Regarding babies born alive after botched abortions, the Center for Disease Control recorded 362 infants deaths as a result of an attempted abortions in the most recently available 10-year period.

“The 362 reported deaths likely do not include even a fraction of the number of newborn infants who die at the hands of abortionists after getting their first breath of air.

“While the abortion industry says this just does not happen, Abortionist Kermit Gosnell was convicted of the murder of three babies born alive after botched abortions. Undercover videotape recordings by LiveAction of numerous abortionists reveal a willingness to refuse infants who survive abortions life-saving medical care.”
