“This is a comment regarding the open positions with the City of Menominee. In today’s (July 15) EagleHerald, the city manager discussed how he advertised for these two professional positions (city attorney and city engineer). He says he advertised in the Marquette Mining Journal and with Michigan Works and so far they have gotten no serious responses.

“Recruiting can no longer be done this way. Businesses looking to fill professional positions use social media like CareerBuilder or Zip Recruiter and professional social media like LinkedIn. And why would they not advertise in this paper (the EagleHerald) for those positions? Don’t get me wrong, the Marquette Mining Journal is great but clearly not enough. CareerBuilder or Zip Recruiter type recruiting sites would bring in some good candidates. The days of just looking locally to fill these types of positions are gone, you need to cast a wider net to attract skilled and talented individuals.

“I would also recommend using a recruiting service like Aerotek to help fill these positions; or better yet, the city should have a human resource department to deal with recruiting, retention, employee relations (which have been an issue for the City of Menominee in the past).”
