Dear Editor,

I wonder what the impeachment trial vote would be if senators had a secret ballot. The secret ballot has long been a hallmark of democracy, but it was taken from Congress in a so-called transparency in government law in the 1970s.

What have individual voters gained by seeing congressional vote tallies? Not so much. But party leaders and lobbyists have gained absolute power to control their ranks.

Take a look at the Youtube (video) called “The Cardboard Box,” if you want to see how the history of the “Transparency in Government” act has played out.
