Dear Editor,

Recently, a group of Marinette School District parents has begun working with the new Marinette Band Director Hilary Oskey, and the new Marinette Choir Director Cyndee Giebler to form a Marinette Music Boosters Group. Many of the members of the Marinette Music Boosters remember the powerhouse music programs of their own time in the middle school and high school in the 1980s and 1990s. With tremendous instructors such as Jay Jensen, Paul Luhring, Glen Reinke, Bill Tipple, Tom Polkinghorne and Tim Yontz, among others, Marinette’s music program was the place to be. In that time, the music program built up the confidence of individual students and instilled in them a pride in their community and school district that lives on today.

We believe that the school district has assembled a tremendous K-12 music staff and we are about to witness a resurgence in our school district’s music program and community pride. We are ready for music to help make Marinette a destination district. We applaud and appreciate the work the school board and district administrators have done to reconfigure the schedule at the middle school to allow students to take both band and choir, as well as the significant financial investment that led to the purchase of new band uniforms for the high school and the purchase of some new school instruments.

The Music Boosters Group has already begun fundraising to support travel and other opportunities that await our students in the music program. We’re using Facebook to connect with alumni. We want to see more and more members of our community take pride in wearing Marinette Music apparel. We’re excited to support the jazz band, marching band, field marching band, concert band, show choir, concert choir and honor bands and choirs.

We encourage the Marinette School Board and district administrators to continue to invest in the staffing of the program to ensure lessons are made available to band and choir students. We appreciate the efforts to plant the seeds for a rejuvenated program! Let’s foster and grow this program even more. Our students and our community will reap the benefits and we will all have a program that is the envy of our region once again.
