Maurice John “Morrie” Rhude, 91, died peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of January 26, 2016, at Luther Home in Marinette, Wis. He was president and owner of Sentinel Structures, Inc. of Peshtigo, manufacturer of structural glued laminated timber. He was born on January 11, 1925 at his parent’s farm near Elk Mound, Wis.

His early education was in a one room school house. He graduated Elk Mound High School and then attended Eau Claire State Teacher’s College for a year before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1943. He was a veteran of World War II serving aboard the USS Denver. After the war he continued his education at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering. He was on the UW Madison basketball squad. He taught engineering courses at UW Madison for five years and was a researcher at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison. He was married to Margaret Jordahl in Madison, Wis. on August 25, 1951. The newlyweds came to Marinette in October 1951, where he started work at Unit Structures, Inc. in Peshtigo as assistant chief engineer. He became chief engineer in 1954 and vice president in 1961 and continued with the firm when it became part of Koppers. In 1972, he established Sentinel Structures in the same facility once housing Unit Structures and Koppers. He was active in community and civic affairs. In 1969, he was fundraising co-chair of the newly established tri-city YMCA. He was on the building committee of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Marinette and active in church events.He was an elected member of the Marinette Board of Education for nine years. For over sixty years he was active in the American Institute of Timber Construction (AITC). He authored numerous technical articles on engineered timber and was largely responsible for creating many of the industry manufacturing and design standards still in use to this day. In 1996, he was declared a life-long, honorary member of the AITC.

Maurice is survived by his wife, Margaret of Marinette; and six sons: Daniel (Laurie) of The Woodlands, Texas, David of Minneapolis, Trygve of Marinette, Thomas (Nancy) of Cross Plains, Wis., Andreas of Minneapolis and Marinette and John (Cheryl) of Sussex; and ten grandchildren: Lindsay, Kelsey, Brittney, Kirsten, Kristofer, Britta, Stina, Jonas, Anika and Carsten. He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn of Eau Claire. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Rhude; sister, Nona, and brother, Donald.

Funeral services will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1600 University Drive, Marinette, on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., prior to the service.

Memorials to Our Savor’s Lutheran Church are suggested in lieu of flowers.
