John Henry O’Brien, 67, of Wallace, Mich., passed away on Monday, Dec. 31, 2018, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Menominee, Mich., on Oct. 4, 1951, to the late Edward and Rita (Plante) O’Brien.
    John graduated from Menominee High School class of 1969. He worked at Giddings & Lewis for over 30 years and Marinette Marine Corp. for eight years, retiring in 2014. John had a passion for drag racing, especially the smell of Nitro in the morning. He also loved off-road racing, NASCAR and NHRA. He enjoyed detailing his truck, spending time outdoors tending to his beautiful flower gardens, family, friends, working in the yard and woodworking. “He was a laborer by trade and a woodworker by heart.” John will always be remembered for his quick wit, his infectious smile and his innovative ideas.
     John is survived by his brothers: Michael (Kyong) O’Brien of Richmond, Va., and David (Teresa) O’Brien of Menominee; and his sister, Mary (Lonnie) Paxton of Locust Grove, Va. He is also survived by his nephews: Mark and Mike O’Brien and Kevin (fiancee Kara) Paxton; and nieces: Celina (fiance Jason) O’Brien, Erin and Michaela Paxton; as well as great-nephews: Conor and Carter Boucher; and close friends: Norman and Elaine and Teddy. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Mark; and his drag racing pal and nephew, Shawn O’Brien.
     Visitation will take place at the Cadieu Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 4 p.m., with Deacon Vincent Beckley presiding.
    Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Menominee.
