MENOMINEE — The City of Menominee was bequeathed $3.8 million from the residuary estate of Irene B. Klar and her late husband Lt. Col. USAFR (Ret.) Loren W. Klar. The will stated the funds would be equally distributed between Spies Public Library and the Menominee Recreation Department. City Manager Tony Graff said the City Council is honored and overwhelmed with the generosity by the Klars providing this gift to the community.

“There are no words to express our gratitude on behalf of the Menominee community to the Klars’ intentions for the betterment of the Spies Library and Menominee Recreation as the benefactor for our citizens,” he said.

Both Klars were laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery. Lt. Col. Klar received a military tribute May 24, 2011. His wife Irene Klar died Jan. 12, 2019 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Graff said Mr. Klar had deep roots in Menominee. He was born to Elof Klar and Hannah Oberg Klar, graduated from Menominee High School in 1939 and attended Michigan Technological University.

Graff said the council will schedule a special meeting for further discussion of their fiduciary responsibilities as stewards of these funds, and request feedback from the community as to how best to honor their wishes, and ideas as to how to honor their generosity to the community.
