MARINETTE — According to an announcement from corporate this week, Shopko in Marinette will be closing its doors this spring.

Shopko has made three separate announcements about store closures since December, steadily increasing the number of stores it plans to shutter. This week, it announced that it will be closing 251 of its stores, 42 of which are in Wisconsin. The list includes the Marinette location at 2741 Roosevelt Road.

Each of the stores on the list has been given an approximate closing date. The Marinette Shopko is set to close on or around May 12.

Shopko was founded in Ashwaubenon, Wis., in 1962, and currently maintains seven locations in the vicinity. By May, those seven will have been cut down to three: 2430 E. Mason St., in Green Bay; 301 Bay Park Square, in Ashwaubenon; and 2320 Lineville Road, in Suamico, Wis. Across 26 states, Shopko operates over 360 locations, which would leave the company with fewer than 110 stores left open if it follows through with all the announced closures.

Shopko and affiliate companies filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors on Jan. 16 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Nebraska, citing assets of less than $1 billion and debts between $1 billion and $10 billion. Currently, the retailer plans to sell its pharmacy assets and turn its optical locations into standalone stores.

“This announcement is an important step towards protecting our future and ensuring our ability to continue delivering the high-quality products and services that our customers are accustomed to receiving,” Shopko said in a news release Jan. 16.

Shopko also said in its release that the “announcement provides clarity about the path forward for us, and we are confident the outcome will be a stronger Shopko.” The company said it would continue to update the public as more decisions are made.
