MENOMINEE — The Secretary of State’s office moved in April from its former location on 10th Street, where it shared a building with Stephenson Bakery, to a new location behind Jack’s Fresh Market. So far, according to manager John Dessart, the move has been good, but people are still having a bit of a hard time finding them.

“People haven’t been able to find us easily, but they find us,” he said, “Google Maps takes them to the post office, so they get to that point and then they’re searching. By about the second week, people were talking about (where we are now) on Facebook, and we got some temporary signs.”

According to Mike Doyle, who works for the Secretary of State communications office in Lansing, there has been a delay in permanent signage for the new location, and some of the temporary signs have gone missing. “The cause for that is unclear, and we apologize for the difficulties this has caused,” he said.

This move didn’t come without its benefits, though. Doyle said part of the reason for the move was that the new location has much better parking space than the old location. Dessart echoed this point, adding that there’s also more space behind the counter in their new office, which makes work easier for the employees. He also said customers have noted that their new location seems brighter and more open than the old one.

“I know we started looking for new space last summer,” Dessart said. “There were people up last summer looking at what spaces were available.”

Dessart said the move took about four days, from April 15-19. “We packed up as much as we could (the Friday before); I stayed until about 8 p.m. to make sure everything was packed. Then a crew from Lansing came up and they moved all the stuff for us.”

He said they had a “soft opening” April 19 after everything had been moved over and unpacked. “We didn’t really advertise that we were open that day, but we had a few people. The official opening was the following Monday,” he said.

The current address for the office is 1305 8th Ave., right next to Great Lakes Home Medical. The office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., reopening from 1:30 to 5 p.m. The office is open on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., reopening from 3:30 to 7 p.m. to accommodate those who work later shifts.
