Scholarship deadline approaching

ESCANABA, Mich. — Bay College awards nearly 300 scholarships every year to graduating high school seniors, current students and returning learners. More than $400,000 is available for students in scholarships for academic year 2019-2020, and a scholarship application must be submitted by March 15 to be considered.

The application can be found online at Students may contact the Financial Aid Office at 906-217-4020 with any questions regarding the online application. Scholarships are available for academic excellence, financial need and specific academic programs.

Council updates on recent fundraiser 

The Marinette & Oconto Counties Literacy Council hosted its annual fundraiser at the Oconto Falls High School PAC “Are You Smarter than an Oconto Falls Fifth-Grader?” Jan. 24. The teams were made up of Oconto Falls Elementary, St. Anthony’s School and Abrams Elementary. Fifth-graders from those three schools competed in fun against area adults on actual fifth-grade study material. Abrams Elementary had the highest score.

Prior to the event and during intermission, a bake sale, basket raffles and a 50/50 drawing were held. Proceeds went to the Literacy Council. One-hundred percent of the money raised goes to the Literacy Council and for the purchase new books and materials for their students and volunteer tutors. This year, more than $900 was raised.

Senior center to host tax presentation 

MENOMINEE — The Menominee Senior Center is hosting a financial planning presentation called “Reducing Taxes” by Vincent Baron of Baron Financial. The presentation is Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., at the center, 905 10th St.

This presentation can help people with their financial planning and tips to reduce taxes. A financial advisor can show people safe and effective ways to manage their accounts with little to no tax penalty. All are welcome to attend.

If people want lunch at the center, they are asked to call at least a day in advance to let them know.
