GILLETT — UW-Extension Marinette, Oconto and Shawano Counties are hosting a Goat Production Clinic at the Gillett Community Center, 200 East Main St., next to the Gillett Library, Feb.17 from 9:45 a.m. to 3 pm.
The clinic is intended to provide both commercial farms and 4-H and FFA members up-to-date information on nutrition, parasite control and reproduction as dairy goat herds in Northeast Wisconsin continue to grow both in number and size and more processors utilize goats’ milk for cheese and other products.
All attendees will participate in the morning topics of discussion when Dwayne Splan, Splan Nutrition Consulting LLC, will review ‘Nutrition Basics for the Dairy Goat Herd’ and share his experience on ration development and ensuring the herd’s nutritional needs are met and Gene Schriefer, Agriculture Educator, Iowa County UW-Extension, will lead the discussion on the FAMACHA (FAffa MAlan CHArt) method of sheep and goat parasite management decision-making.
In the afternoon session, attendees will have a choice of attending either Dr. Vicky Lauer, Professional Services Veterinarian with Animart LLC., as she shares her knowledge of methods and management techniques on “Improving Breeding and Kidding” in the goat herd or Scott Reuss, Marinette County UW-Extension Agriculture Educator, as he enumerates techniques to get started in an efficient grazing system and how to maximize both forage productivity potential and animal productivity of meat and dairy goats with high applicability to sheep producers, under the theme, “Getting the Most from your Pastures.”
The cost of the event is $30, which includes lunch and materials but will be waived for local 4-H and FFA youth members that show goat or sheep at one of the three host counties’ fairs and who preregister with the Oconto UW-Extension office. Registration is required as there may be a late fee charge of $10 for same day registration.
