LENA, Wis. — Crop budget projections point toward continued slim margins for 2019 production, especially in less predictable production areas. Tight margins certainly create challenges, but also possible opportunities, as producers prepare for the new cropping season.

UW-Extension of Marinette and Oconto Counties are sponsoring a workshop designed to help producers analyze crop budgets as they make crop rotation, crop insurance coverage, land rent and management practice decisions.

The event is being held at the Lena Town Hall, Goatsville and Jagiello Roads, northwest of the Village of Lena, Friday, starting at 9:45 a.m. The two-part program will start out by focusing on costs of production and likely revenue, developing 2019 crop budgets for the area’s primary crops. The budgeting spreadsheet will be available to all producers to then make individual farm or field changes to the generalized numbers, allowing fine-tuning of their own decision making.

After lunch, the group will utilize the developed budgets and use them to analyze how changes in production practices may affect overall per acre profitability. The effects on both costs and revenue for various management practices will be open for discussion and analysis. This will include standard practices such as weed control, fertilization, hybrid/cultivar selection or seeding rates, as well as including practices such as cover crops, fungicide use, soil/seed treatments and others. The analysis process will be facilitated by Scott Reuss, UW-Extension Crops/Soils Agent, but will be driven by the producers and agronomists in attendance.

This program is open for all producers and consultants to attend. There is a $5 lunch fee that will be collected on-site. Preregistration is appreciated, but not required. To register, or someone has any questions about the program, they may contact Reuss at 715-732-7510 or email scott.reuss@ces.uwex.edu. Attendees are welcome to bring their laptops along so they can receive and work on the spreadsheets that will be utilized.

If someone is unable to attend this event, but wants to discuss cropping issues on their farm, they may contact Reuss to set up an appointment. Please call the Marinette County UW-Extension office, 715-732-7510 or 1-877-884-4408, to request any type of accommodation or assistance that may be required to attend this event. All requests will be kept confidential. For more information about the UW-Extension, people may visit http://www.uwex.edu/es/cty/marinette.
