MENOMINEE — The Menominee American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 146 held its regular meeting at the Legion Post, 1st Street, Nov. 12.

Barbara Kanyuh, Americanism chairman, discussed Veterans Day and health issues that affect veterans’ well being. 

Judy Pier, children and youth chairman, said the Unit’s “Giving Tree” will be decorated for Christmas, and donations of hats, scarves, gloves and mittens are needed. Also, Rainbow House’s Snuggle-up-with-a-Book project will accept donations until Dec. 10. 

Sherry Nutter, education chairperson, reported success with the plastic lid donations for Blesch Intermediate School and the Friendship Bench Program. A discussion about school supplies given to Central Elementary School from the overflow of donations at St. Vincent de Paul, Menominee, followed.

Julie Hendrick, Girls State chairman, said letters were distributed to area businesses and organizations requesting donations for the Girls State program. Fincantieri Marinette Marine made a donation.  

Donna Lewis reported for Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation; Oscar G. Johnson Medical Center, Iron Mountain, Mich., Christmas Party is scheduled for Dec. 3.

Jane Raygo, Wreaths Across America chairman, said 913 pasties were sold to support the program’s expenses, and the group discussed donations that were received.

On Dec. 7 at 10 a.m., the ALA will conduct a memorial ceremony, and place 267 wreaths on the gravestones in the Veterans Memorial Section, Riverside Cemetery. The community and legion members are encouraged to attend.

Joann Torreano, Christmas Ball Raffle chairman, said gift donations will be accepted for the raffle until Dec. 1.

Upcoming events include:

■ Dec. 7: Wreaths Across America ceremony in Veterans Memorial Section, Riverside Cemetery, Menominee at 10 a.m.

■ Dec. 10: ALA Christmas Dinner Party, social hour is at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6. The cost is $16 which includes tax and tip. People may register for the dinner at the Legion Post by Saturday.
