Honor: Tutor of the Month award for December

Name: George Hayes

Organization: Marinette and Oconto Counties Literacy Council

Why honored: Hayes worked in the education field, hoping to inspire many young minds to follow their dreams. Following retirement, he volunteered time and service in working with adult literacy students. Hayes had the idea of forming a book club for men in the Marinette County Jail; which has seen good results. The books they read are often classics, such as “The Grapes of Wrath” or newer releases and books written by Wisconsin author, Michael Perry. After reading one of Perry’s latest books, the inmates asked George if the author would be able to come and speak with them in the jail. The author was contacted and he agreed to speak with the men. Perry spoke of his life growing up on a farm, his work while putting himself through college, becoming a writer and his current life on his hobby farm. Some of the inmates expressed dreams of writing someday and had questions for Perry about this process.
