MARINETTE - When President Barack Obama submits his proposed fiscal year 2013 budget to Congress Feb. 13, Marinette Marine Corp may be affected. However, it's too early to tell for certain if, when, and how any effect will be felt. One thing that is known for certain - Obama's proposal will call for a reduction of two Littoral Combat Ships sometime between next year and fiscal year 2017. On Thursday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta confirmed the LCS reductions and a host of other defense programs that will suffer funding cuts in the coming years. Marinette Marine is one of two shipyards currently building Littoral Combat Ships for the U.S. Navy. Austal USA, located in Mobile, Ala., is building the other of the Navy's two LCS variants. And Thursday's Department of Defense announcement confirmed that the Alabama shipbuilder will be affected beyond its LCS program.
