LUXEMBURG, Wis. - A seventh-consecutive Bay Conference girls' golf title doesn't seem so doubtful now.
Marinette moved into a virtual tie with Denmark for the Bay girls' golf lead with a first-place finish at Tuesday's final conference meet.
Since Denmark won three of the first four conference matches, the Vikings have gone 1-2-1 against the Marines.
It will all come down to next Tuesday's conference tourney, which is double weighted in the league standings. Marinette will need to finish ahead of Denmark to retain the title. The tourney will be held at Wander Springs in Greenleaf, a neutral site but close to Denmark.
As far behind as they were two weeks ago, the Marines are thrilled to be in this position.
"We're coming around at a perfect time," Marinette coach Stephanie Haines said. "They've finally gotten their mental game on. They're shrugging off the bad holes. They're not letting other things get into their heads."
Marinette shot a 184 to beat Denmark by five strokes at the Par 36 Northbrook Country Club.
Marine senior Abby Dufrane claimed medalist honors with a 38. Dufrane had five one-putt greens.
"She said her putting was on," Haines said. "A lot of those greens are elevated and quick."
Cassie Hilbert crushed her typically long drives and shot a 46.
Kayla Thielen carded a 48 for the Marines.
"For what she's been doing she didn't like the score she got," according to Haines.
Lexi Bretl shot a 52 and Liz Lang fired a 54. After parring the first hole, Lang's game went downhill.
In her first season as head coach, Haines has learned not to put so much pressure on her team before matches.
"They're a group of girls that needs to have that mentality of 'go out there, have fun and play your game,'" Haines said.
Alex Roman shot a medalist round of 48 to lead Marinette's junior varsity to another win.
