CRIVITZ - There's an urgency to work as hard as possible in the wrestling practice rooms across Wisconsin this week.

The road to Madison begins with wrestling regionals on Saturday. The top two wrestlers in each weight class advance to sectionals. Regional team champions advance to next Tuesday's team sectionals.

It's all cut-and-dry for state dreams and hopes.

"They don't take the top two, their season is done," Crivitz coach Matt Bernier said.

Crivitz senior Dan Tomaszewski fully understands the urgency of the moment. He has 77 career wins and an impressive 22-5 record this season, but he has never advanced to state.

"That's been my goal since I was 3," Tomaszewski said. "That's about the only thing I could wish for now."

Crivitz will head to Saturday's Division 3 Three Lakes Regional, where the Wolverines will compete against five Northern Lakes Conference teams. Crandon is the overwhelming favorite to win the team title, but the Wolverines have several wrestlers with good shots to make sectionals.

None has a better chance than Tomaszewski at 182 pounds.

"Ideally I'd like to take first," Tomaszewski said. "That way I'm not wrestling one of the best guys right off the bat (at sectionals)."

At sectionals, to be held on Feb. 22, first-place wrestlers at regionals are paired against second-place finishers from another regional.

Tomaszewski has won four tourney titles in his prep career - three times at the Crivitz tourney and once at last month's Peshtigo Invitational.

He's driven by last year's sectional failure. Leading 7-0 in aconsolation bout, Tomaszewski reinjured his ribs and lost 9-7 to Andrew Kocourek of Reedsville. Had Tomaszewski held on to win and then won his next bout, he would've advanced to state.

"More than anything I've ever wanted in my life," Tomaszewski said of state. "This is what I have. This is what I'm good at."

Tomaszewski is good on his feet, and he's adept at executing throws. He's working to set up different moves to be less predictable to wrestlers who are familiar with his style.

He credits his teammates for pushing him hard in practice.

"I have to really apply myself," Tomaszewski said. "Next week is gonna be hell. I'm gonna have to work and work and work."

The Wolverines are focusing on conditioning and strength training this week.

"Now the pressure's on. We're just trying to finalize everything," Bernier said. "Remember that the basics is what is going to win it for you."
