SEYMOUR, Wis. - Seymour got the higher softball seed but the Marinette Marines got sweet redemption Thursday night.
The Marine girls swept a Bay Conference doubleheader 1-0, 10-9 over the Thunder.
On Wednesday, Seymour gained a No. 5 seed while the Marines were seeded sixth. Both teams were 1-11.
"That didn't sit too well with us," Marinette coach Pato Thyne said. "I told the girls, 'show them who's the better seed,' and they did."
Ellie Wahl's spectacular day and some timely hitting carried the Marines to a sweet sweep. In Game 1, Wahl pitched a two-hit shutout, with 13 strikeouts and three walks.
"Ellie was dominant that first game," Thyne said. "She hit her spots."
Brianna Kempen hit a leadoff single in the seventh inning for the Thunder's first hit. Rebecca Simpson followed with a double, and the Thunder had runners on second and third with no outs.
When Kempen tried to score on a wild pitch, catcher Cameron Anglehart threw to Wahl for the putout. Wahl fanned the next two batters to end the game.
Marinette scored its run in the sixth when Cassie Hilbert hit a two-out single, Emmie Dessart walked and Wahl cracked a double down the left-field line.
In the first inning of the second game, Anglehart drew a leadoff walk, Hayley Honeychurch was hit by a pitch and Hilbert walked. Dessart drew a bases-loaded walk, and Wahl slugged a grand slam.
The lead grew to 9-4 in the fourth inning. Hilbert singled, Dessart reached on an error, Wahl doubled and Taylor Ewaldt singled to plate three runs.
The Thunder rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth and five in the fifth to tie the game. Three errors opened the floodgates in the fifth.
But Wahl crushed a walk-off solo homer in the sixth. She hit it into the teeth of the wind in straightaway center.
"I mean she tagged it into the wind," Thyne said.
Wahl lost some steam in the second game but still picked up the win.
The Marines will play host to West De Pere in a doubleheader on Monday.
"Very gutsy performance by them," Thyne said. "This is a big boost for us. I hope we can carry it into Monday."
