PESHTIGO - Peshtigo's 17-and-under softball team served notice with an impressive performance to open tourney play Friday.

Peshtigo Youth Softball is holding tournaments for 17U, 14U, 12U and 10U this weekend. The fields got waterlogged by Friday's rain, but the groundscrews got them ready without delay for Friday's first-round games.

The Peshtigo girls crushed Ashwaubenon B 12-4 in the17U opener.

"I really thought as a group they played spectacular," Peshtigo coach Francie Reif said. "Ther defense was really good and their offense was really good. They came together."

Peshtigo built a 7-1 lead in the second inning. Maizie Reif crushed a two-run home run over the center field fence.

Kelly Staudenmaier went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and Reif had two hits and three RBIs. Dani Zahn, Teja Tonn and Brooke Immel each went 2 for 3.

Reif earned the win on the mound.

In Friday's other 17U game, Ashwaubenon A edged Oconto Falls 5-4.

Marinette and Peshtigo battled to a 7-7 tie in a 14U opener. Marinette's 14U team later beat Oconto Falls 10-1. One Peshtigo 14U team beat Oconto 10-0, and the other Peshtigo 14U team lost 13-1 to Green Bay Tundra.

The Marinette 12U team lost 5-0 to Oconto Falls.

In the 10U tourney, Peshtigo edged Marinette 3-2 and Ashwaubenon B defeated De Pere 7-4.
