GREEN BAY - A gusting wind, a hard-hitting AshPort team and lack of clutch hitting made for a rough opener for the Marinette Legion team in its Green Bay Southwest Father's Day Tournament Thursday night.
AshPort scored four runs in second and fourth innings and cruised to a 9-3 win over Post 39.
Marinette turned three double plays but misplayed three fly balls in the windy conditions.
"Defense definitely wasn't our strong point," coach Brian Lesandrini said. "We struggled on fly balls in the wind."
Jake Monroe ripped a two-run single to highlight AshPort's four-run outburst in the fourth inning. Monroe went 3 for 5 and drove in four runs.
"They're a good hitting team, but we came out flat and played pretty poorly," said Lesandrini.
AshPort built a 5-0 lead before Marinette got to Jack Violetta for two runs in the fifth inning.
Jake McMahon poked a single, Ty Bebo coaxed a walk and Keefer Powers reached on an error to load the bases. Beau DeLaet, making his season debut for Marinette, drove in McMahon with a sacrifice fly and Derek Klegin drove in Bebo with a single.
Violetta left the bases loaded in the fifth and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.
Klegin drew a walk in the seventh, Scott Eldredge moved him to third with a single and Luke Kelly drove in Klegin with his infield grounder.
Austin Wright gave up six earned runs on right hits and five walks in his 4 2/3 innings while taking the loss.
