Not to worry, Marine golfers

SEYMOUR, Wis. - A new season with a new coach and three new varsity players brought the same results - good golf - by the Marinette girls' golf team Friday.
Marinette shot a 388 to place third at the 16-team Thunder Invite.
"I wasn't expecting what I got today," Marine coach Stephanie Haines said. "I'm very pleased."
Marine senior Abby Dufrane shot a medalist round of 75 at the Par 73, 5,472-yard Crystal Springs Golf Course. Her closest challenger, Kayla Priebe of Fox Valley Lutheran, fired an 81.
"Abby just had everything going for her today," Haines said. "She was just nailing her drives. She said everything felt right. Everything was on."
Dufrane needed just 27 putts for her 2-over-par round.
Junior Cassie Hilbert scored a 100 for the Marines.
"I like Cassie because I can depend on her for consistency," Haines said. "If she could improve her aim she could probably shave quite a few strokes off."
In her first varsity meet, sophomore Kayla Thielen fired a 104. She struggled with her drives but utilized a tip from Dufrane.
Despite hitting her tee shots right, sophomore Lexi Bretl scored a 109. She switched to a 6-iron off the tees to minimize the damage.
"I was really impressed with Lexi," Haines said. "For being her first varsity meet she held her own."
Liz Lang, a junior, shot a 116 for the Marines. She hit three shots in the water on the front nine.
"She was not in rhythm today at all," the coach said.
Fox Valley Lutheran won the meet with a 359 and Bay Port was second with a 381.
The team and coach felt nervous tension before Friday's meet.
"My pre-meet speech today was 'make me proud, have fun and just do your best,'" Haines said. "They can only do their best. Don't stress yourself out because it's only going to make it worse."
Marinette beat the other four Bay Conference teams at the tourney. The Marines have won six consecutive conference girls' golf titles and eight in the past nine seasons. Haines, a 2007 Marinette High School graduate, has been a part of that dynasty as a player and as an assistant coach. She has just one senior, Dufrane.
Other team members are junior Alex Roman, sophomore Abbie Rastall and freshmen Kaylee Oscarson and Hallie Olsen.
"The upperclassmen have definitely taken the underclassmen under their wings," Haines said. "They are a very dedicated group. All of the girls have gone out and played after practice."
